Through research and competitive analysis, Samsung identified a unique positioning in native app icon design. One UI's bright squircle containers with white flat icons created instant brand recognition which is a significant achievement for visual identity. However, closer examination of competitor approaches revealed intentional design strategies that extended beyond aesthetics: icons that told stories, created relatable metaphors, and leveraged users' existing mental models.
When nearly every leading platform converges on similar design principles, it prompts an important question: Are we charting a uniquely effective path, or are we missing insights that the industry has collectively validated? Beyond brand differentiation, there was a more fundamental consideration on how intuitive One UI icon system is for first-time users? Major brands employ design philosophies that help users identify apps based on purpose and personality, using visual cues that align with how our brains naturally process and categorize information.
This raised critical questions. Could One UI maintain its distinctive identity while adopting principles that enhance usability and intuitive recognition? How might we lower the learning curve for new users without alienating our existing Galaxy community?
This project explores how One UI 8 can evolve by learning from competitive strategies without abandoning the visual language that Galaxy users recognize. The goal was to enhance discoverability and intuitive understanding while preserving the brand's identity built through One UI's established design system.
